Global Burden of Malaria

Malaria is the most prevalent vector-borne disease in the world, causing more than 2 million deaths each year, mostly among young children. Keith Carter from the World Health Organization and David Smith from the National Institutes of Health will examine the impacts of malaria on public health worldwide and the challenge of modeling and controlling how the disease is spread.

Dr. Keith Carter is the malaria advisor for the Americas for the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization.

David L. Smith, Ph.D. is a mathematical epidemiologist in the Division of Epidemiology and Population Studies at the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health and an Associate Professor in the Department of Zoology and Associate Director for Disease Ecology at the Emerging Pathogens Institute at the University of Florida.
