School Field Trip Reservation Procedures
All school field trips must be scheduled in advance. Field trips are offered on weekday mornings and afternoons. Tuesdays are recommended since the museum is closed to the general public in order to accommodate field trip visits, exclusively. In depth field trips are limited to between 12 to 36 students, but the museum can accommodate larger school groups. Students should be in grades 9 and above due to the level of the museum's content. Unscheduled visits by school groups will not be offered the field trip program.
To request a field trip:
1. Complete the online Field Trip Request Form or call 202-334-1201 to reserve a date.
It is recommended that requests be submitted at least four (4) weeks in advance of the requested date in order to receive your first choice date and time.
2. Confirm details with the museum's field trip coordinator.
You will be contacted within two (2) business days of submitting your request to confirm available dates. At that time the coordinator will also gather additional information about your students in order to ensure that your class has the best experience possible.
3. Review background materials once the field trip is confirmed.
Once your field trip is confirmed, you will receive a confirmation email containing background material and the worksheets your students will use. Please review this information carefully and contact the museum's education office at (202) 334-1201 with any questions or concerns.
4.Make arrangements for payment.
Admission payment is required to finalize your reservation. See the Group Payment, Refund, and Cancellation Policy for details on payment.
5. Finalize all arrangements with your school district and parents.
At least two (2) weeks (or at the time required) before your field trip, please finalize all arrangements with your school district, send out field trip permission forms to your class's parents, and arrange for chaperones.
6. If you students are participating in a jigsaw-format fieldtrip, return a completed Field Trip Group Assignment form 48 hours prior to your field trip.
8. Prepare your students for their visit to the museum.
The Koshland Science Museum has found that the most successful field trips occur when students have been prepared for their visit. Your students should be prepared for active learning! Please inform all students that they will be working in groups and will be responsible for participating in group discussion. Hand out the Roles and Strategies for Student Leaders sheet out to the students you selected as student leaders.
