Extreme Event on the Road: EW Stokes Public Charter Students Explore Consequences

Koshland staff customized the script to ensure students understood key concepts throughout the game

In March 2017, Extreme Event was on the road again to Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School in Washington, DC. Koshland staff visited EW Stokes back in December 2016 when they brought Extreme Event to their 4th and 5th grade teachers. As part of the school’s mission to prepare its students to be leaders, scholars and responsible citizens who are committed to social justice, the 5th grade class had recently embarked on a unit all about consequences. Through the use of a multi-disciplinary lesson plan, students created their own businesses to learn about environmental issues, industrialization, and the concepts of supply and demand all in the context of consequences, both predictable and unforeseen. To get their students into the right mindset for this exploration, teachers invited Koshland staff back to EW Stokes to facilitate Extreme Event: Rock City

Drop, cover, and hold on! This is not a drill!

Weeks after Koshland staff facilitated Extreme Event: Rock City, Teachers Ms. Anderson and Mr. Jolon reported that, “Students had a natural disaster hit the shipping of materials for their company they had created. They took some losses from that and they had to readjust their budgets and priorities in order to accommodate the effects. So they had to work together to make decisions about what was important and how to solve the problem, just like in the Extreme Event game”.
