Extreme Event on the Road: Illinois Floodplain Managers Experience New Outreach Tool

In March 2017, Extreme Event was on the road to the Illinois Association for Floodplain and Stormwater Management (IAFSM) Conference in Springfield, IL. As part of the Association of State Floodplain Managers, IAFSM’s objectives are to promote the common interest in floodplain and stormwater management; enhance cooperation among various local, state, and federal agencies; and encourage effective and innovative approaches to managing the State's floodplain and stormwater management systems. Part of IAFSM’s work also involves community engagement and education, so they reached out to Koshland about bringing Extreme Event: River City to this year’s conference.

Koshland staff facilitated Extreme Event for about 60 participants including conference attendees and 4th and 5th-grade students from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s University Primary School. After the game Koshland staff opened the floor up for discussion related to how the game could be used in participants own communities and organizations. Additionally, the materials used for the game were created by IAFSM and will be made available after the conference to members to use in outreach to their schools and communities.
