Extreme Event on the Road: Presque Isle State Park

Presque Isle State Park, Pennsylvania’s only “seashore”

In this week’s Extreme Event on the Road feature, we’re highlighting another organization that facilitated Extreme Event as part of their environmental education programming.

Presque Isle State Park, located in Erie, Pennsylvania, is a 3,200-acre sandy peninsula that arches into Lake Erie. As Pennsylvania's only "seashore," Presque Isle offers its visitors a beautiful coastline and many recreational activities.

The Tom Ridge Environmental Centre located in the park

The gateway to Presque Isle is the Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC) dedicated to teaching visitors about the park and the many different forms of life that inhabit the unique peninsula. The TREC also houses a theater showcasing a variety of environmental themed educational films. Most recently, the theater featured National Geographic’s Extreme Weather movie. Park staff thought Extreme Event would be a great companion program to this film.

Emily Hauser, the Environmental Education Specialist at Presque Isle, facilitated Extreme Event: River City for a group of 21 participants invited from the local community. Feedback from the game was very positive and park staff is exploring the possibility of offering Extreme Event again as a high school activity and/or an in-house team building activity.
