Distracted driving and vehicles that are increasingly, but not fully, automated are factors combining to create new kinds of road hazards. Researchers who study the psychology of driving use simulators and sensors to understand how humans and technology interact in this new environment. They apply what they learn to the design of new vehicle features that can react and correct when drivers lapse.
