Extreme Event on the Road: DC Teachers Bring Resilience to the Classroom

In December 2016, Extreme Event was on the road to the 4th and 5th grade teachers of the Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School in Washington, DC. The Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School prepares 350 culturally diverse elementary school students in the District of Columbia to be leaders, scholars and responsible citizens who are committed to social justice. During a 2-hour professional development session, Koshland staff helped teachers experience Extreme Event, participate in a lesson-planning exercise, and discuss how to implement the game in their classrooms. This group was particularly focused on how Extreme Event fit into the 4th and 5th grade Next Generation Science Standards on Earth’s Systems and Earth and Human Activity. Participants were not only excited about how the game linked directly to the classroom, but also how the format could be used to investigate other ideas as well.
